Saturday saw the last organized holiday events in Bandon. It was Shop Small day in town, and Santa and Mrs. Claus came to the Old Town Marketplace for a visit. The chill in the air didn’t stop people from turning out to support local businesses and to meet the couple in red.
Starting at 11:00, cloth shopping bags filled with special discounts and sweet goodies were available in the picnic shelter, encouraging everyone to shop small. Shops and restaurants were doing a humming business with people finishing up their Christmas shopping and keeping it local.
The last Old Town Marketplace of the season helped shoppers to shop small. Food was a main attraction at the market: tacos, cheesecake, bread, coffee, and even a little leftover produce. Giftable arts crafts such as potholders, paintings, prints, beautiful wooden windmills and funny wooden reindeer offered a gift for everyone on every list. Live entertainment at the door greeted people as they entered.
At 1:00, shop small turned into see Santa. A shiny red firetruck entered the Marketplace parking lot, and from it emerged Santa and Mrs. Claus, armed with a basket full of candy canes, ready to meet and greet dozens of children. They hung out with little ones outside the door, then made their way into the building to their designated spot equipped with chairs and a cute backdrop, all ready for pictures. A line of kids and parents quickly formed for photos on Santa’s lap, generously provided without charge.
It’s been a very festive Christmas season in Bandon, and to some degree it will continue throughout the week as people finish up their shopping. For the most part, it will quiet, winding down until next Sunday. Town will be very quiet, but homes will be cheery as friends and family gather for good food, good fun, and celebration.
Happy holidays to all!
