The Fourth of July is coming right up, and for those lucky enough to be in Bandon for the day, there is a packed schedule of fun and action planned. From a parade to cardboard boat races to live music to strawberry shortcake, there will be something for everyone.
Independence Day will start at 10:00 with a fly-over by Bandon’s Aero club, followed by a parade in Old Town. Red, white, and blue will extend down 1st Street as people of all ages watch horses, classic cars, and even clowns drift by.
The farmer’s market will be open for the special day with fresh produce, goodies, arts and crafts, good food, and live music. Participate in cornholl (bean bag toss) games and a fire show before the fireworks start. Bring your lawn and camp chairs so you can comfortably hang out and enjoy the fun.
From the market, head to the Lions Club Old Fashioned BBQ at the City Park from 11-2. Pulled pork sliders or hot dog meals will be avilable for purchase as well as drinks and root beer floats. There will be live music, vendors, and a bouncy house and other kids’ activities.
This year, WinterRiver Bookstore has a special visitor for the 4th of July. Timothy Zahn, author of a huge collection of Star Wars novels and Bandon resident, will be there at 1:00 for a book signing. His books, including his newest Star Wars book Thrawn will be available.
If you’re still hungry or are opting for a later lunch, the VFW at 55382 Bates Rd. will be hosting a family-friendly 4th of July BBQ and potluck from 2-5. Burgers and hot dogs will be provided, and folks are encouraged to bring a dish to share.
Go back to the river to the Port of Bandon boat launch in Old Town for the 3rd annual Cardboard Boat Races from 3-5. This event began its first year with only a few creative and brave souls but exploded into a huge event last year. Several heats and categories were necessary to make sure everyone could participate, and many awards were given. This year promises to be even bigger and more exciting, and it will surely be good for some laughs.
After the laughs at the races, grab some apple pie and ice cream at the enclosed picnic shelter. This fundraiser benefits the Greater Bandon Association.
The Alive After Five Wine Walk goes from 5-8. Wine glasses will be available at the picnic shelter on the boardwalk, and many businesses (open late for the occasion) will be offering wine tastings. An artists’ reception for spinner/weaver Barbara Lebiedzik and art demonstration will be going on at Art By The Sea Gallery from 5-7.
Throughout the day, enjoy live music at the farmers market and the annual art show on the boardwalk with hundreds of paintings done by local artists in the theme of “Blossoms, Butterflies, and Bees.” The Quality Crafters Guild will be holding its annual summer sale at the Barn Community Center from 10-4.
Grab some dinner, then head to Brewed Awakenings for a drink and more excellent live music. Sly and Friends will be playing some classic pop covers from 7-9 to entertain us and make us smile and move before the fireworks begin. Reservations are suggested. 541-347-1970.
There’s one more chance for a sweet bite; apple pie and ice cream for purchase will reappear at the picnic shelter from 8-10.
But don’t head home quite yet, because the grand finale happens at dusk (around 10:00) with the Grand Fireworks Display. The display happens over the Coquille River in the area of the lighthouse, but there are many excellent spots around for viewing, including the South Jetty, the North Jetty, and anywhere the lighthouse can be seen. The show is sponsored by Face Rock Creamery, the Bandon Chamber of Commerce, and the City of Bandon (thank you!).
Don’t miss this day of fun!
